SC State Fair Equine Scholarship
YOUTH HORSE EXHIBIT GUIDE
The South Carolina Horsemen’s Council is committed to providing scholarship funding to outstanding young equestrians in SC through our Youth Scholarship Program. If you are a student in grades eleven, twelve, or in a college or technical school program and eighteen years or younger, you are eligible for the SC State Fair Equine Scholarship competition.  

The SC Horsemen’s Council  and Farm Bureau Federation are pleased to sponsor The SC State Fair Equine Scholarship. To date, SCHC has awarded $12,000 in Scholarships. The SCFB Federation will provide a $2000 scholarship to the top scoring individual. The SC Horsemen’s Council will  provide a $1500 scholarship to the second highest scoring individual and $500 to the third. 


Applicants must be a South Carolina resident and enrolled in grades 11 - 12 or enrolled in a college or technical college. Applicants must be 19 years of age or younger on January 1st of the scholarship year.
 
Applicant must at some future date pursue a four-year degree program or a recognized technical college program. The scholarship will be given upon entry to college or recognized technical college program.

SC 4-H Application Process 

The application form and guidelines may be found on the S.C. State Fair website - www. scstatefair.org. Each applicant must be an exhibitor at the S.C. State Fair Youth Horse Show in the year of application. Direct link - https://www.scstatefair.org/competitions/youth-horse

An official scholarship program entry form and resume` must be submitted to the scholarship program coordinator in September of the year of application.  Previous scholar- ship winners are ineligible.
Showcase your talents in our Youth Horse Department.
Exhibitors must be nineteen (19) years of age or under as of January 1 of the current year. This is also applied to each age division, i.e. 12 and under class entrants must be 12 or younger as of January 1.
Youth Horse Important Dates & Times Open Entry Registration: July 1 – Sept. 1, 2022
Show Dates: 
  • Friday, Oct 14 -5:00 PM
  • Saturday, Oct 15 - 10:00 am
  • Sunday Oct 16 - 12:00 noon

The application form, guidelines, and entry forms for the Horse Show are available on the SC State Fair website at  https://www.scstatefair.org/competitions/youth-horse/

Deadlines are strictly enforced.  Applicant must be an exhibitor at the SC State Fair Youth Horse Show and must have entered by deadline  Scholarship application to be considered.  Be sure to get your application forms and entry forms in before the posted deadline  

Contest  Details
The contest is scored on a point basis with a total of 500 possible points. The submitted resume and entry form are awarded a possible 100 points. Resumes are scored on a rubric by a committee of academic professionals.

The first phase is a written knowledge assessment test is administered. This is a 50 question test for a possible 100 points, covering basic equine husbandry and knowledge.

In the second phase, each applicant is interviewed by a three-member committee of industry professionals. The interview covers various current events and hot topics in to- day’s horse world. A possible 100 points may be earned in this interview.

The final phase of the contest is the skills assessment. The applicant must use the same horse to perform in showmanship and equitation/horsemanship classes. Each class is worth a possible 100 points.
