Tuxbury Horse Trail
Francis Marion National Forest

This 14-mile loop trail ambles along old railroad logging trams, traversing a wide array of habitat types from mature longleaf pine stands to bottomland hardwood drains. It offers captivating scenery to visitors who may glimpse prothonotary warblers darting among swamp cypress knees or endangered red-cockaded woodpeckers in search of food in the bark of majestic longleaf pines.
 
Camping
Dispersed camp anywhere on forest well away from trail. Camping permit required, available free at the district office. No camping at trailhead.

Trails
  • Miles of Trails: 14 miles
  • Difficulty Level: easy
  • Terrain: sand
  • Drinking Water: Stream water is safe for animals to drink
  • Fees: no fees for day use

Directions
 From Charleston, take US Highway 17 North to the intersection of SC Highway 41. Turn left and continue seven miles to the trailhead on the left.
